History

The origins of Elddis Transport stretch back to the 19th Century when Thomas Cook purchased his first horse and cart in 1881. After the death of Thomas Cook in 1942 his son Siddle took over the majority of the business and created Siddle C Cook Limited. This grew to be one of the largest privately owned heavy haulage companies in the country before it was sold to the shipping company Tayforth in 1964.

 

Elddis Transport was formed in 1971 when Geoffrey Cook, Siddle’s oldest son bought a local haulage company with 6 vehicles and 11 trailers. Originally the main business was the transport of steel on flat trailers from the local steel works in Consett. With the closure of the steel works in 1980 the business changed direction and developed into a specialist in the movement of consumer goods, which is where it remains today.

 

The family ethics are a corner stone to the business, with high staff retention and some blue chip clients who have remained with the company for 38 years. In fact, more than 40% of our turnover is made up of clients we have worked with for over 30 years and 60% of turnover is made up of clients we have been working with for more than 20 years.

 

This is an extremely demanding sector and it requires high levels of service and round-the-clock operations in order to stay ahead of the competition and offer an unbeatable service.

 

Today, Elddis Transport is a major player in transport and distribution, with a blue-chip customer base, excellent staff, state of the art equipment and enviable service levels.
